RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (29 Mar 2009) - Surgeons at Saracurana Hospital have successfully removed a six-inch fishing spear from a man`s head after he shot himself while diving near Rio de Janeiro.

Authorities in Brazil told CDNN that Emerson de Oliveira Abreu said the spear ricocheted off rocks and entered his brain before he had time to react.

It took five hours for Dr. Manoel Moreira and a team of surgeons to remove the spear from Abreu`s head.

Miraculously, the victim is expected to fully recover because the spear entered his head just above his left eye and did not damage critical parts of the brain.

Medical experts told CDNN that Abreu suffered "only very minor brain damage, which probably explains why he now wants to sue himself for gross negligence or buy Google stock".

"It`s a very common side effect of surgery to that part of the brain," they explained.

"Another centimeter to the right and we would be talking homicidal maniac, freediving professional or possibly worse..."
